Our story
The Roost Homestead was a dream long before it was built. In less than one year after moving to the property, we went from nothing to 50+ chickens, 16 ducks, 7 sheep, 4 rabbits, 3 geese, 2 pigs, and two large gardens. We always have plans for expansion, specifically with our breeding programs and gardens.
Of the chicken breeds we’ve had, we quickly fell in love with English Orpingtons. They are large hardy birds that look like big vibrant puff balls on legs jogging through the yard. We wanted to get the best of the best - and quickly dove into colors and confirmation.
We have a mix of hair sheep - katahdin and Barbados blackbelly ewes, and a St. Croix ram. We have a small flock in a large pasture, and continue to make changes breed the best.
The ducks were a surprise joy, they’re excellent foragers and are equally entertaining with their quirkiness. They’re also surprisingly great egg layers! The geese watch over the property as they make rounds every day and like to urge everything to run on a schedule. Two piggies and four rabbits are fun pets to have around!
We have plans for garden expansion as we have a passion for medicinal herbs and roots such as garlic and ginger. We like making fire cider in the fall, and bake all year round!
As a homeschooling family, we look for ways to educate kids and encourage them to find fun in helping around the property. We want to someday expand our family education to other families who may not have access to so many animals and the learning opportunities that come with them!
